La mostra presenta oltre quaranta opere che ripercorrono la sua carriera dagli Anni '70 ad oggi e non c'è cornice migliore del Museo Correr di Venezia, storico crocevia fra Oriente e Occidente. Schnabel, infatti, oltre a essere un grande artista americano, è anche un artista del mondo che ha fatto da ponte fra Est e Ovest, assimilando culture diverse e aprendo nuove strade all'arte. Il suo è un progetto di sdoganamento per le nuove generazioni di artisti, una spinta a espandere i confini dell'arte contemporanea.
La retrospettiva illustra la sua poetica fortemente ispirata a Jackson Pollock e Cy Twombly, ma basata anche sulla tradizione europea e mediterranea che ricorda lo stile dei vecchi maestri spagnoli e italiani - come El Greco e Tintoretto - e che interpreta rimandi letterari e culturali, antichi e moderni da Omero e Eschilo, all'arte dei grandi maestri, da Giotto a Goya, da Antoni Guadì a Pablo Picasso.
Oltre ai suoi celebri plate paintings la mostra offre opere create con una varietà infinita di tecniche e materiali - dal velluto alla tela cerata, da pezzi di legno recuperati in tutto il mondo, a vele, fotografie, tappeti, teloni e qualsiasi superficie piatta che ispiri i suoi processi creativi - e illustra un modo di utilizzare queste materie che, estrapolate dal loro contesto originario, assumono nuovi significati come realtà dipinta.

The exhibition presents more than forty works, exploring Schnabel's career from the 1970s to the present and offering an opportunity to admire paintings and sculptures by a great artist and all-around American phenomenon. The retrospective illustrates his aesthetic, strongly influenced by Jackson Pollock and Cy Twombly, but also drawing on the European and Mediterranean tradition. His art recalls the style of the old Spanish and Italian masters, such as El Greco and Tintoretto, and reworks ancient and modern literary and cultural references from Homer to Aeschylus, to the art of the great masters like Giotto, Goya, Antoni Gaudì and Pablo Picasso.
Best known for his plate paintings, in fact , Julian Schnabel has used an infinite variety of media and materials to create his works, from velvet to oil cloth, from pieces of wood from all over the world to sails, photographs, rugs, tarpaulins and, in general, any flat surface that inspires his creative process. They take on new meaning as painted objects.
