Doppio Gioco a Bevilacqua La Masa di Venezia

DOPPIO GIOCO: L'AMBIGUITA' DELL'IMMAGINE FOTOGRAFICA

a cura di
Filippo Maggia

Non fermatevi all'apparenza.

Philip Kwame Apagya (Ghana)
Fikret Atay (Turchia)

DOPPIO GIOCO: L'AMBIGUITA' DELL'IMMAGINE FOTOGRAFICA
Double game: The Ambiguity of the Photographic Image

curated by
Filippo Maggia

Don't stop at appearances. Seductive, elegant and coy, the images of the new exhibition to be held at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice from 4th April through 24th June are only partly what they appear to be at first sight. Behind their humorous and carefree facade, they are capable of tackling complex and at times painful issues, from the relationship of a people with its own past, to the space of the individual within a social reality still too riddled with contradictions, and from the manipulation of information to the disillusionment of the new generations.
Held in collaboration with the Fondazione Fotografia and curated by Filippo Maggia, the exhibition brings together a selection of works by 19 international artists from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena collection. Striking in terms of both the immediacy and efficacy with which - from beneath the cover of apparent light-heartedness - they delve into issues that are often disarming and unresolved, these photographs, videos and installations are all in fact closely bound up in contemporary reality and our own existence.
With differing approaches and modulations, dictated by their various cultural origins, the artists on show offer visual short circuits, continually subverting the initial levels of communication. They provide food for thought, or simply new points of view, and above all they remind us of just how the language of imagery may at times be ambiguous or even mendacious as regards the message which it sets out to put across.
Taken to the extremes, this discrepancy may be incredibly disorientating, as is the case of the installation portrayed in the 11 photographs by Zbigniew Libera, presented in the form of a familiar toy. The shots, entitled LEGO Concentration Camp, use the famous coloured bricks to reconstruct the stereotypical images of the Nazi lagers so firmly embedded in our collective awareness. Through this extremely provocative work, the Polish artist alludes to the cultural familiarity with which we relate to one of darkest events of the 20th century, despite the fact that similar atrocities - from the Soviet gulags to the Balkan repressions - have unfortunately been (and indeed continue to be) repeated.
While several of the works investigate our relationship with the recent past, others serve as a starting point for a reinterpretation of the present, going into issues which are just as collective as they are closely bound up in the consciousness of every individual. This is the case of We are the World, the video installation by the Cameroonian Goddy Leye put together using the melody of the song of the same name written in 1985 by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie as part of a major fundraising event for Africa. This tongue-in-cheek version turns all preconceived notions on their heads, its great simplicity unveiling a whole series of prejudices against a continent which has been looked down upon far too long.
The role of the artist, be it put to song or put to question, also lies at the heart of works which focus on the art system as a whole. The young Bulgarian artist Ivan Moudov scrutinises his fate for a week in the dregs of seven cups of coffee, comparing various predictions, while the photographic series by Mladen Stilinovic constitutes a sort of provocative art manifesto. The emblematic title, Artist at Work, shows the artist as he tosses and turns, half asleep, in his bed sheets: despite all the models of production imposed by society, the artist states, sloth is the key condition necessary for artistic creation.

The exhibition features 49 photographs, 9 videos and an installation by:

Piccante (detail), oil, graphite on canvas, 196 x 210 cm 2008
SHOW & TELL

una mostra personale di
Stacy Gibboni

a cura di
Natasha Bordiglia

carnale, dove finalmente riposa.
piccole tele…

SHOW & TELL

a solo show of work by
Stacy Gibboni

curated by
Natasha Bordiglia

In the exhibit Show and Tell, the art of Stacy Gibboni attacks us with its color, every brushstroke
constructs a net of marks inviting us to enter becoming one with the artists gesture. An internal
landscape where the eye bounces like an overwhelmed butterfly drunk on the nectar of an immense
yellow bloom, stopping to drink blood red flora and deep blue fauna, emerging in a creamy carnal
white space where finally it rests. A syncopated rhythm is demanded to follow this brushwork, a
rhythm where the key strokes are chased and recalled in a kind of circular dance in which we are
invited to participate. This participation is intense and intimate: a story upon which to enter.
A story – many stories – emerge from large and small canvases where a scene is cut out and blown
up, a scene containing isolated elements - buds, petals, leaves, trees - creating colorful compositions
overflowing from within the depths of the picture frame. Instantaneously transcribed markings of an
organic nature distributed upon the pictorial surface creates a painting lived like a text from an
autobiography. And so the story told in the show is one story: Stacy Gibboni's story.

TOOLKIT FESTIVAL02 a Venezia e Forte Marghera

TOOLKIT FESTIVAL02

3-5 maggio

Day #1 | 3 maggio >

Artisti selezionati:

Liam Alexander (US)
Marco Cecotto (IT)
Mauro Ferrario (IT)
Pink Flamingos (US)
Joseph Knierzinger (AT)
Ubikteatro (IT)
Therudedisign (IT)
Francisco Godinho (PT)

Day #2 | 4 maggio >

Artisti selezionati:

JesterN (IT)
Kathleen Delaney Dance Co. (IT/US)
Luca Moroni//Masako Matsushita (IT)
Parcodiyellowstone + dfe (IT)
SapoLAB (IT)

Day #3 | 5 maggio >

Artisti selezionati:

Cani Giganti (IT)
Les MistonS (IT)
Maesia//FAX (IT)
Vjvisualoop (IT)
Apparati Effimeri (IT)
Peeta (IT)

Toolkit festival 02 // Venice 3>5 may 2012

Toolkit returns to Venice with a second installment of the festival, exploring the theme of interactivity
in new media art. REACTIVE SYSTEMS, 2012’s chosen title, explores the processes that run
parallel to a tangible, final product. The intent is to showcase the developmental processes that
an artist produces during the creation of a work of art.

the scientific committee made up of Domenica Quaranta, Valentina Tanni and Debora Ferrari communicate the results of the call for the 2012 edition of the Toolkit Festival, REACTIVE SYSTEMS.

The selected artist are:

Cani Giganti (IT)
Les MistonS (IT)
Maesia//FAX (IT)

The organizing committee of the Toolkit Festival also wants to thank all the artists who participated in the call.

More than 80 requests have been sent, and this confirms the interest of the international artistic community towards this kind of festivals, which is one of the rare occasion to display such appraoches due to the fact that most of the exhibition spaces are inadequate for it.

This year in particular many requests came from abroad, giving an example of the variety of the artistic scene in which the occasions for meeting and exhibitions are considered an important moment for the artists to meet an audience that grows year after year.

Festival Programme:

Day #1 | May 3 >
Venice’s A plus A will inaugurate an exhibition of interactive installation that will be on display throughout the entire event. The selected works will create an opportunity for the public to interact directly with the works.

Day #2 | May 4 >
The Ca’ Dolfin Palace will host a day dedicated to interactive performance. An artist collective shifts between contemporary dance and AV installation.

Day #3 | May 5 >
Atelier Eve Ar: V Forte Marghera hosts the collective Apparati Effimeri, who will put on a stereoscopic video mapping installation on a wall mural designed by grafitti artist, Peeta. A selection of video maps curated by Claudio Sinatti will be on display throughout the evening.

Unlike the 2011 edition, REACTIVE SYSTEMS will be a traveling festival, moving to different locations that will host daily events. This choice has allowed us to identify the appropriate contexts for varied artistic expressions. Immersive environments, interactive installations, performances, dance and electronic music will be accompanied by learning opportunities, such as a workshop designed by Claudio Sinatti on contemporary techniques of video mapping, merging the study of architecture with the latest digital design techniques. The workshop will be held from May 3 - 4 at A plus A, and will conclude with an evening presentation of the works created, May 5 at Forte Marghera.

TOOLKIT FESTIVAL was founded with the goal of exploring the expressive horizons that existed only in a virtual sense up until a few years ago. Now, thanks to technology, artists are able to enrich the reality of bodies, places and architecture by displacing traditional concepts of the “art exhibition”. The 3-day event is an attempt to involve a whole city in a unique experience, and prove that interactivity is not just a response to stimuli but a complex system made up of ideas, people, places and a mutual exchange of energy.

The initiative was realized with the contribution of senato degli studenti Iuav e Ca’ Foscari and with the collaboration of the AplusA | Slovenian Exhibition Centre, Eventi-Arte-Venezia, TargetDue and Comune di Venezia – Assessorato alle Politiche Giovanili e Pace.
