Durante i miei viaggi in Medio Oriente (1989-2010) ad un certo punto lessi, "The Journey of Ibn Battuta" ("Il viaggio di Ibn Battuta") del grande scrittore egiziano Naguib Mafouz. Pensavo fosse un racconto di fantasia. Lo era, ma era basato sul vero Ibn Battuta, studioso ed esploratore musulmano. Nella mia ricerca sulla sua vita e le sue esplorazioni non avevo intenzione dei ripetere il suo viaggio lungo ventinove anni, ma la vita ha voluto che seguissi vagamente le sue orme.
Seduta in un caffè del centro commerciale di Dubai intitolato proprio a Ibn Battuta ho immaginato questo progetto. Questa mostra è una parte del progetto più ampio. Credo che ora sia un ottimo momento per mostrare questi gioielli architettonici che testimoniano le origini ed i tesori di queste grandi culture.

During my trips to the Middle East (1989-2010), at a certain point I read, "The Journey of Ibn Battuta" by the great Egyptian writer, Naguib Mafouz. I thought is was an imaginary story. It was, but based on the real Ibn Battuta, an academic and Muslim explorer. In my research about his life and explorations, I did not intend to repeat his twenty-nine year journey, but my life wanted me to vaguely follow his path.
Sitting in a café in a Dubai shopping center named Ibn Battuta, I envisioned this project. This exhibition is part of a larger project. I believe that now is the perfect time to display these architectural jewels that show the origins and treasures of these great cultures.

During the exhibition, some musical selections by Lynn Davis and Philip Glass will be featured in music collection made specifically for the event.
